No one can control where their bodies choose to store extra fat, but genetics may have an influence. That’s why those who are prone to developing a so-called double chin probably have a few close relatives with the same problem. Because such pockets of fat are usually resistant to diet and exercise, Dr. Iris Gin and the top-notch team at Kalia Dermatology and Laser Center offer KYBELLA® neck lift injections, an advanced treatment designed to erase double chins for good. Located in Los Gatos, California, Kalia Dermatology and Laser Center serves patients from across the San Francisco Bay area.

Kybella Neck Lift Q & A

What is KYBELLA?

KYBELLA is both a prescription medicine and an FDA-approved injectable treatment used to reduce submental fullness, or the area of excess fat that sits beneath the chin (commonly called a double chin). The treatment’s active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid, a substance that can already be found in its natural form inside your body, where it helps your digestive system break down the fats in your diet for absorption.

When this molecule is injected into fat cells beneath your chin, it targets the cells’ integrity so they can no longer accumulate or store fat. As a result, your chin loses some of its fullness, and gains an improved profile.

Is KYBELLA right for me?

If regular exercise and a nutritious diet doesn’t seem to have an impact on the extra fat beneath your chin, or if having submental fullness makes you feel self-conscious, or heavier or older than you really are, KYBELLA could be the right solution for you.

In addition to being the only injectable treatment for submental fullness that’s approved by the FDA, KYBELLA is a safe, effective, and non-invasive option for those who want to improve the appearance of their chin without surgery.

KYBELLA isn’t right for everyone, however. You should avoid treatment if:

  • You have an infection in the treatment area
  • You have any medical conditions that affect your neck area
  • You’ve ever had cosmetic treatments or surgery on your face, neck, or chin
  • You’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing

What does the treatment entail?

Your KYBELLA procedure begins with a customized treatment plan that addresses your individual needs. KYBELLA is designed to work over the course of multiple treatments spaced at least four weeks apart. Although some patients see visible results after just two sessions, others need closer to six. Most patients achieve optimal results in two to four sessions.

During each procedure, Dr. Gin will administer multiple small injections under your chin, in a process that takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The exact number of injections you’ll need depends on your desired outcome, as well as the degree of submental fullness you’re dealing with. The common side effects of swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and redness, are usually mild and short-lived.

How long does KYBELLA last?

Once you’ve completed your treatment plan, you can expect long-lasting results.
