Microneedling & PRP Q & A

What is microneedling rejuvenation?

Microneedling rejuvenation, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves the use of tiny needles to create micro-wounds on the surface of your skin, which stimulates the production of collagen and helps tighten underlying skin structures. This new, advanced technology can help correct or reduce the appearance of a wide variety of skin flaws, including:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Surface scars: Including those caused by acne
  • Visibly large pores
  • Stretch marks

The wounds created by microneedling are very small and superficial, so the procedure requires nothing more than topical numbing creams. The depth of the needle placement varies depending on what’s being treated: Stretch marks and acne scars require a slightly deeper needle depth than enlarged pores and fine lines.

What can I expect from the treatment?

Dr. Gin and her team of licensed RNs perform microneedling using the state-of-the-art Dermapen® fractional microneedling device. With its spring-loaded disposable needle tip, Dermapen has a vibrating, stamp-like motion that delivers a safer, more controlled treatment experience than similar devices, resulting in minimal discomfort and a better outcome. To achieve optimal results, patients typically need to undergo a series of treatments.

Microneedling isn’t considered painful: Discomfort is generally minimal, and patients who have undergone other aesthetic procedures say that the tingling and light prickly sensation feels similar to microdermabrasion. Afterward, your skin may be slightly red for an hour or so, but these side effects are minimal and most patients can resume normal activities immediately.

What is a PRP facelift?

A PRP (platelet rich plasma) facelift uses your body’s own natural growth factors to address skin flaws and volume loss by triggering the production of new collagen and skin cells. The platelets in your blood contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors, which are designed to restore and strengthen your skin and body.

PRP is a preparation made from a small amount of your own blood, which is drawn before the treatment and processed mechanically to create a product that contains 5-10 times more platelets than normal circulating blood. PRP also contains other beneficial bioactive substances, including platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor (TGF).

Dr. Gin and her team use the Dermapen fractional microneedling device to inject PRP into the fine lines, wrinkles and other areas of your face that need correction. PRP facelift treatments can help actively boost collagen and elastin production, resulting in tighter skin, wrinkle appearance reduction, and improvements in skin tone and texture.
